Wear Red & White Stripes for Ronald McDonald House Charities

We've all heard of McDonalds and their golden fries, but many might not hear of Ronald Mcdonald House Charities (RMHC)

Together with 14 other bloggers, I was invited by Omy Blog to a cozy dinner and gathering on Wednesday at McDonalds, Suntec City. It was an informal session where I got to find out more about Ronald Mcdonald House Charities (RMHC) and the series of activities that will be rolled out in the next few weeks globally, to bring love to sick and hospitalized children.

Being around since 1989, Ronald Mcdonald House Charities (RMHC) has been around for 40 years and has helped over 900 needy and sick children with their medical, surgical and rehabilitative treatment costs, with grants amounting to over S$5 million.

Something that caught my attention was their interesting concept of "Home-away-from-home" which started in January 2013. It is a home that consists of 4 bedrooms is provided at no charge for families to be able to stay close to their hospitalized child at the National University Hospital (NUH). If you want to get a better understanding of the RMHC house, watch the video below.

Together with us at the dinner that evening was Executive Director of RMHC Singapore, Judy Chin, and Joyce, a recipient or the RMHC house as well as a strong mother, who shared with us her past experience of living in the house and how greatly it has helped her and her daughter, who was hospitalized due to pre-maturity. Her sharing touched me deeply as I could imagine the fear in every child of having to stay in hospitals alone, especially at night, and how as a parent, the only important thing is just to be there for their child no matter what.

Here's a photo of me and Joyce, the strong mother, who is really cheerful, positive and optimistic no matter what she went through, for the sake of her two daughters.

Some photos from that night's dinner, with the carefully decorated cordoned-off area for us, all in splashes of red, pink and white. For the food wise, what's McDonald dinner without our favourite fries, nuggets (and curry sauce of course), coke and sundae (strawberry sundae, so as to match the theme).

So, this is how you can help and make a difference in these sick and hospitalized children and their families' lives!

1. Make a donation and show your stripes

You can make a donation by purchasing a pair of red and white striped socks from Groupon, either at $10, $20 or $50. With every pair of socks purchased, you get to redeem a free strawberry sundae.

2. Share your stripes through #forRMHC and #RMHCSG

Dress in red and white stripes or create your own red-and-white themed images. Share your photos along with your well wishes for these families on instagram with #forRMHC and #RMHCSG.

3. Join McHappy Day 2014 on 16 November 2014

600 volunteers will be participating in the McHappy Day Walk and Sale all over Singapore, selling their signature red and white striped socks. Families with young children can also join in the fun at the #forRMHC Party at Tampines Mall from 1-5pm. There will be balloon sculpting, face painting, games, and Ronald will be there too!

Do your part for these children and their families! Thank you Omy Blog and Ronald McDonald House Charities for the opportunity to be part of this meaningful cause!
