Had those days when you just want to get out of people's sight, walk into a cafe and just have a quiet me-time by yourself (probably with a good book too)? Yes, this is one of those days when splurging on a good cafe meal is the only thing you feel like doing. And since PUNCH is near my workplace, why not?
For first timers, you might just overlook the obscure cafe that has almost no signboards or logos. Just a full-length ceiling to ground glass window and glass door. However, what I really like about this cafe is that there is no menu. As soon as I sat down, the waitress kindly greeted me and started introducing to me the dishes that are available in the kitchen for the day. After quite some minutes, I asked shyly if there was a menu. She chuckled at the frequently asked question and explained that they believed in having engagements with their customers, thus, decided not to have a menu. Interesting concept I thought. So don't be shocked if you had to ask for many repeats on what's available.
Opened by the owner of The Plain and Ronin, PUNCH didn't disappoint when it comes to the ambience. Hanging bronze bulbs, white, brown and black furniture, tiles to contrast with the minimalist feel. Walk all the way to the end of the cafe, and you will find a courtyard that features hanging feature wall plants with long brown benches around for you to sit and chill while sipping your cup of freshly brewed coffee or latte.
Honestly, I had some second thoughts before ordering this Smashed Avocado on Sourdough with Poached Egg and Charred Lemon ($13) dish, since I wasn't really much of an avocado lover. Oily, creamy, however you describe it. Clearly, I wasn't thinking much when I went ahead with this. I guess I was thinking too much about the poached eggs. But this totally blew my mind. I am truly a convert now. My new found favourite breakfast combination: Avocado with poached eggs. The first bite into the creamy and thick smashed avocado that went so well with the nicely-done runny poached eggs, brought me to my second and third and so on. However, I still have this tough problem with eating hard toasts like these. Any soft-bread lovers out there?
You would have probably seen these round little doughnuts floating around your Instagram feed quite a lot. Try their Jam, Nutella, Custard Doughnuts ($1.20 each) if you have a sweet tooth. A little overrated and pricey for a doughnut, but well if you are having a bad day and just want some doughnuts, or take some photos for your instagram, you know what to get. Was kind of expecting the fillings to be bursting out when I pry it open, but nope, it doesn't ooze out as much as we all wish for it to. Nevertheless, doughnuts any time and any day for me.
